The O.J. McDuffie Catch 81 Foundation provides community assistance to disadvantaged youth through the generous support of donors and sponsors. One sponsor in particular, BankAtlantic, has really stepped up to the plate and offered support to the Catch 81 Foundation in many ways. In addition to monetary support, the employees from BankAtlantic have volunteered and attended all of the Catch 81 Foundation fundraising events. These acts of kindness truly show BankAtlantic’s high level of dedication to improving the South Florida community.

BankAtlantic’s support has helped the Catch 81 Foundation put on events such as the Spring Celebrity Golf Classic, the Signature Grand Ghoul, O.J. McDuffie’s Strikes for Kids and the O.J. McDuffie Softball Slam. These events have raised thousands of dollars for community programs that assist underserved children.

Last month, BankAtlantic was the VIP Reception sponsor for the O.J. McDuffie Spring Celebrity Golf Classic, which took place at the Signature Grand in Davie, Florida. The event began with Jon Saxx captivating guests with his beautiful saxophone performance. Joe Rose entertained the crowds as the Master of Ceremonies. Celebrities and guests mingled and danced, while dining on gourmet food and enjoying a premium open bar.

Thank you BankAtlantic for all that you have done for the O.J. McDuffie Catch 81 Foundation.

Players and fans came out on February 13, 2011 to participate in the O.J. McDuffie Co-ed Softball Slam presented by Publix. Eight teams competed, but only one team could take the championship title. The Original Fat Cats claimed the winning title, which now gives them the bragging rights of being undefeated. Team Publix played long and hard and wound up winning the second place trophy. The day was filled with food, prizes, friendly competition and even a DJ playing music to pump up the crowds and keep teams motivated.

Overall, everybody had a lot of fun. The weather could not have been more perfect. The comradery and dedication to raise funds for the underserved children in South Florida was heartwarming. Thank you so much to our sponsors, teams, fans and supporters, who all helped make the O.J. McDuffie Co-ed Softball Slam a success.

Bring a new unwrapped toy to Buca di Beppo between 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and get a restaurant discount. You will also be able to get autographs from O.J. and his teammates for coming out to support the cause. The toy drop off box is currently located in the lobby at Buca di Beppo and will remain there through December 13.

October was an extremely busy month for the Catch 81 Foundation! We had the Strikes for Kids bowling fundraiser on October 10 and the Signature Grand Ghoul on October 25. We had an amazing turnout at both events, which would not have been possible without our guests, supporters and sponsors.

On October 10, 2010 bowlers grabbed their bowling shoes and their bowling balls to support the efforts of the O.J. McDuffie Catch 81 Foundation. The first place winner was E.F. Tire and Auto with Bill Martinez, Sam Logiurato, Dave Peters and Eddie Deatley on the team. Eddie Deatley also took the prize for high game winner! Overall the event grossed more than $27,000, which will be used for a variety of community efforts. In addition to using the money to fund our holiday donations to Jack and Jill Children’s Center and the SOS Children’s Villages, some of the money will also be used to fund the charter school that is in the works.

Deon Anderson, linebacker of the Miami Dolphins, took home the celebrity trophy.

Earlier this year, many kind supporters joined with the Catch 81 Foundation to help a brave little girl. Last week, Brilei celebrated her first birthday. This is Brilei’s story in the words of her mother.

This year our family decided to celebrate Brilei’s first birthday a bit different than most. To us it was not only a birthday, but a celebration of the Journey we traveled this past year of her life. A dear friend of ours Joe Elkind, offered his beautiful home to us to host her party. We had a wonderful dinner and Mr. Jon Saxx came out to play the saxophone for Brilei, which touched many hearts. We also had a wonderful turnout of our friends and family who have loved and supported us through it all. It was a beautiful evening.

The evening of her arrival was very exciting for all of us. Although there were a few complications the outcome was the most beautiful perfect little angel. She was 6 lbs. 10 ounces of pure heaven. With a head full of the deepest chocolate brown hair and eyes the color of cocoa, we instantly fell in love. How were we so blessed?

After a long night of routine events, her first bath and different tests, I was finally able to have my baby back in my arms. My feeling was I never want to let this precious gift go. The next morning in all our glory and as we were down to our last few hours before being discharged, a nurse came in to administer her last test. They were checking her heart, as they routinely do, only this time was different. The nurse came in to let us know that they had heard a murmur. They told us they would need to call in the cardiologist for further testing. What felt like the longest hour of our lives came to an end when the acting cardiologist came with the news that Brilei was born with a heart defect and this was called Tetralogy of Fallot. She went on to explain this condition and with each word that came out of her mouth, time seemed to stand still. The “what ifs” and “why us” consumed my every thought. The best day of our lives became the scariest.

As we sat there trying to ingest the unjust, she further explained that that this would require open heart surgery at some point during infancy and that this surgery would depend on the strength of our precious baby girl. If Brilei stayed strong, it may buy us some time and surgery could wait until she was strong and healthy.

The goal was to wait until she was at least 6 months old and this would allow her the best conditions for her surgery. Our prayers began with the understanding that at any time Brilei could have a TeT spell. This is one of the conditions that cuts of the blood flow in her pulmonary vein and does not allow oxygen to flow. At this point Brilei would to turn Blue and at that point requiring immediate surgery. For six months mommy had sleepless nights, afraid that while asleep I would miss this moment and something bad would happen. So we kept her happy, loving her every second of every day.

We would not allow her to ever cry. I laugh when I say ever, because we literally would not let her cry because this could affect the flow of oxygen. This would make her heart work harder and throw us into a situation we didn’t want to see for quite some time. There were people that commented, “Babies need to cry because it’s healthy.” However, they didn’t they didn’t understand that this would create a premature situation, so I followed my heart.

Each cardiologist appointment showed great standing. We would have to do these about every three weeks until that day would come. Dr. Claudia Pierra and staff were amazed how healthy and strong our Brilei looked. Looking at her you could never tell our baby had this defect. Most babies with heart conditions are very little and very weak. Dr. Pierra would always say, “Just keep doing what you’re doing.” In her soft, sweet and assuring voice, she would say, “You’re doing great.”

On March 3rd, during one of her visits to me at work, she had a spell. Frantically we rushed her to Miami Children’s Hospital where they immediately admitted her. Brilei was almost six months old. We could have never prepared for this moment. This began the tearful two week stay. This is hard for me to revisit this time. The toughest thing we ever had to go through, the unknown and the uncertainty. To see your child like that is unexplainable. The team at Miami Children’s Hospital was wonderful.

On March 8th Brilei was taken into surgery. It was a somber morning and nobody said much. Her father and I were quiet. At one point, the tears stopped and I had an unexplained peace about me. A peace only God could provide. I knew at that point this was in God’s hands. That he would see this through. To imagine a man, a human being, taking her tiny heart and fixing it… I knew Gods hands were guiding his. I knew that Brilei’s angels were right beside her.

Throughout out the surgery, the nurse would come out and give an update and we would wait for the next update. Finally, Dr Burke came out with his staff to give us the news that our baby Brilei made it through. He went on to explain every little detail and that the hardest was yet to come. We broke down, we thanked him and hugged him and thanked him again.

We wanted to see our baby and to hold her. It would take days before we could do that. I think the hardest part for me was to see her post surgery because she was almost unrecognizable. My heart broke all over again. The aftermath brought new fears and new obstacles. The next few days were the toughest we’ve ever known.

In a blink of an eye, we had our baby back. Our baby was going to be alright! God answered our prayers. We climbed a mountain those past six months and we ended up on the top! The doctors told us she will need an additional surgery in the years to come. With medical technology and the power of prayer we know that she will overcome. It’s something we try not to think about right now. We are just enjoying and loving our miracle baby every minute of every day!

The Catch 81 foundation was wonderful by raising financial support to help with expenses along with reaching out to others by raising awareness on her condition. O.J McDuffie, his family and friends were also a big part of Brilei’s prayer circle and very supportive of us during our difficult time. To our friend and our brother, thank you O.J. for all you’ve done for our family and thank you Catch 81 foundation.

Brilei is a beautiful bouncing baby and we couldn’t be more proud of her. She has a strength that some only dream of and a heart that God has touched. We hope one day to start a foundation of our own on Brilei’s behalf to help families with babies and children with heart defects. We want to raise awareness on these conditions and give hope and support through others’ stories. We thank you all and most of all, Brilei thanks you.
